A “sensible” car

March 26th, 2010

gts-back-small Time for an update on my other hobby: my cars.
In September last year, I traded in my Porsche 911 Turbo for a shiny new Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster. And I love it, especially when the weather’s nice and we can drive with the top down.

But this exchange left me with two convertibles, the new Aston and the Lotus Exige. Not a very logical combination of cars. In practice we always used the Aston, it’s just a more comfortable car. The Lotus was sitting in the parking lot, unused.

Another issue was that neither of these cars was very practical, in terms of luggage space. (a Porsche 911 suddenly seemed like a very practical car).

Anyway, we decided that the smart thing to do would be to trade in the Lotus for a more sensible car. A car we could use for grocery shopping. Still being a Porsche lover, I soon decided it would have to be a Cayenne. A used Cayenne S would do fine, maybe even one of the older (and cheaper) pre-facelift models.

However, browsing used Cayennes online I changed my mind. I did want the face-lift model after all, as it’s much better looking (some would say less ugly). The other thing I learned is that most Cayennes are black or silver. Not what I had in mind.

So I widened my search, to include younger occasions and also the more expensive GTS and Turbo models.
And there it was: a 2008 Cayenne GTS, in white, with 23 inch black rims.

Of course costing way more than I was planning to spend.
I started researching the difference between the S and the GTS models. The GTS is faster, sportier and has a nicer interior. 405 hp, 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds (for a car weighing 2225 kg!). Sounded right up my alley.

A test drive with the white monster truck confirmed this. I loved it, an SUV that drives like a 911! (well, almost). So I signed right away.
Three days later we could pick it up. (the big advantage of buying used cars: no delivery delays). We have been enjoying our white van for 2 months now and we still can’t help grinning ear to ear everytime we drive it :-)

Oh… Speaking of delivery delays…. 3 weeks after I got the GTS I purchased another car, a new one. And it’s scheduled to be delivered early 2012, a 24 months delivery time! Ouch… More about that one later.
